The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as food stamps) helps more than 900,000 Louisianans keep food on the table and frees up resources for families to meet other basic needs, such as paying the rent and keeping the lights on. But that’s not all the program offers: SNAP Employment and Training funds support programs that help SNAP recipients connect with work.

When it comes to paying for government services, Louisiana asks a lot more of those with the fewest resources than it does of its wealthiest citizens, according to new analysis by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy.

Black citizens are underrepresented as undergraduates and on the faculties of America’s four-year public universities, according to a new report card by University of Southern California that was financed by the Ford Foundation. Nowhere is the problem worse than in Louisiana.
