Will the Legislature pass a budget?

The Legislature’s most important task during its annual regular session is passing a budget. But many predict the Legislature won’t accomplish that task during the regular session this year, because doing so would require cutting more than $700 million, mostly from critical health and education programs.

Looking beyond the “temporary” sales tax

The “temporary” 1-cent increase in Louisiana’s state sales tax, approved by lawmakers in 2016, was supposed to serve as a bridge to structural tax reforms. But those reforms never came, as House leaders rejected the recommendations of its own task force and other reform advocates.

Ending DACA is bad for business

President Donald Trump is expected to withdraw Obama-era legal protections for more than 800,000 immigrants who arrived in the United States as children of undocumented parents. Many recipients of DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, have lived in America for decades, building families, careers, and businesses.
