Tucked away near the sleepy town of Jena in central Louisiana is a former juvenile prison that now serves as a privately operated detention center, where 1,200 immigrants spend their days under lock and key while waiting to find out if they can stay in the United States or face deportation.

Federal tax cut promises don’t add up

The U.S. House of Representatives narrowly approved the Senate’s budget resolution on Thursday, clearing the way for both chambers to continue their efforts to enact a $1.5 trillion tax cut that would disproportionately benefit the wealthiest Americans.

Fighting something with nothing
