Fiscal reform cannot wait

Although the state’s revenue picture is expected to brighten by up to $300 million once federal tax changes take effect, the extra revenue won’t be nearly enough to plug the $1.5 billion shortfall in next year’s state budget that is mostly due to temporary taxes expiring on July 1.

While the tax overhaul signed into law by President Donald Trump last month will drain at least $1.5 billion in federal revenues over the next decade, it will have the opposite effect in Louisiana, thanks to an unorthodox tax deduction embedded in the state constitution.

Mr. Cassidy goes to Washington

By most accounts, the GOP’s efforts to replace the Affordable Care Act with something that covers far fewer people is dead, at least for the moment. But someone forgot to tell Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy, who flew back to the nation’s capital on Monday for a White House meeting with beleaguered President Donald Trump.
