Public school funding should keep up with inflation

Public school districts in Louisiana will receive an additional $54 in state funding for every enrolled student this year, thanks to an increase in per-pupil spending approved by the Legislature. The MFP could be an effective anti-poverty tool if funded properly

Louisiana is one of 23 other states where funding for K-12 public education remains below what it was before the Great Recession. Combined state-local funding for Louisiana schools was 3 percent below 2008 levels in 2016, after adjusting for inflation.That’s according to a new report by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.Read more...

Haggling over teacher pay

Gov. John Bel Edwards and several legislators have said that pay raises for public school teachers and support workers is a top priority in 2019. But the exact size of that raise is likely to be the subject of heated debate in the coming months - a skirmish that started Wednesday when a state task force began reviewing the annual state funding formula for public schools.
