Who pays taxes in Louisiana?

When it comes to paying for government services, Louisiana asks a lot more of those with the fewest resources than it does of its wealthiest citizens, according to new analysis by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy.

1.2% - Percentage of income from the wealthiest 1 percent of Louisiana households that goes to pay sales and excise taxes. In comparison, 9.2 percent of income from the poorest fifth of the state’s households, who earn $10,500 a year, on average, goes toward sales and excise taxes. (Source: ITEP)

Contingency planning

Louisiana’s 2017-18 budget is currently balanced. But Republican state lawmakers don’t believe the state’s revenue projections will hold up, and have asked Commissioner of Administration Jay Dardenne to provide a list of $60 million in potential mid-year cuts.

Cassidy wants cuts to care

Sen. Bill Cassidy remains committed to ending the Medicaid expansion that is covering more than 430,000 low-income Louisianans, eliminating individual market subsidies for middle-income people and capping and cutting the traditional Medicaid program.

Number of the Day
