A radical shift on immigration policy

President Donald Trump is proposing to make life much harder for legal immigrants to the United States. A new federal rule - long anticipated but filed late Saturday night - would make it more difficult for people to stay in the country if they use “non-cash” forms of public assistance such as housing vouchers, food benefits or Medicare drug benefits.

Budget gimmicks will not solve revenue problem

Using one-time money to pay for long term, ongoing expenses is not a sustainable way to run a household, let alone a state budget. But that’s exactly what House GOP leader Lance Harris is proposing as a fix for Louisiana’s fiscal cliff.

A new approach to work requirements?

Gov. John Bel Edwards has yet to lay out his vision for how to connect Medicaid recipients with jobs; those details are being worked on by an outside consultant. But in a letter to The Advocate, Louisiana Health Secretary Rebekah Gee suggests it won’t be the punitive approach favored by state Sen. Sharon Hewitt and other legislators.
