Louisiana could save $70 million a year by moving 9,000 people convicted of nonviolent drug offenses to drug courts - and even more if the programs expanded statewide. The numbers come from a new Legislative Auditor’s report that also finds Louisiana sends people to prison for nonviolent offenses at much higher rates than other states.
