Medicaid spending lower than expected

Louisiana’s Medicaid program has become a scapegoat for fiscal conservatives, who falsely blame the federal-state health care program for the state’s structural budget shortfall. In reality, state spending per enrollee is relatively low compared to other states and the Medicaid expansion is saving state general fund dollars.

The tax bill and the fiscal cliff

While the tax overhaul signed into law by President Donald Trump last month will drain at least $1.5 billion in federal revenues over the next decade, it will have the opposite effect in Louisiana, thanks to an unorthodox tax deduction embedded in the state constitution.
