Jan Moller, Director Louisiana Budget Project

Jan Moller is Director of LANO’s Louisiana Budget Project, which monitors and reports on state government spending and how it affects Louisiana’s low- to moderate-income families. He is an award-winning journalist formerly with the New Orleans Times-Picayune Capitol Bureau, where he covered the state budget, health-care, higher education and races for Louisiana Governor and U.S. Senate seats.

Moller’s resume includes influential reporting and editorial posts across the country, including co-authoring with Jack Anderson the syndicated “Washington Merry-Go-Round” column that appeared in more than 300 newspapers nationwide, and Assistant Washington Bureau Chief for Parade Magazine, a weekly publication with a circulation of 20 million. As an investigative reporter, Moller’s work led to reforms in Louisiana’s nursing home regulation and to ethics violations for city officials in Nevada.

 

Tim Mathis, Analyst (Focus: Education)

Tim Mathis is originally from Dallas, Texas, and has two Bachelor’s degrees from Louisiana State University in Philosophy and Political Science.

As an undergraduate, he worked as a Legislative Intern on issues in education and non-profits and later served as an Intern in the Office of Congressman Bill Cassidy. After graduation, Tim spent one year teaching high school Economics in Baton Rouge at Istrouma High School.

Since joining LBP, Tim has covered a broad range of issues, including TOPS, payday lending, film tax credits, and education finance.

 

Karen Miller, Communications/Public Relations

Karen Miller develops and implements the communications and public relations program in order to build awareness of The Louisiana Budget Project’s mission, programs and achievements. She manages and coordinates all media relations, special community events, and external publications.

Karen previously worked at the Secretary of State’s office as a Graphic Designer and Public Information Officer where she performed the lead role in the layout, design, and production of all promotional pieces disseminated by the Secretary of State’s Office, including those for 17 state-run museums. Karen holds a bachelor’s in Communications from Pensacola Christian College in Pensacola, Florida.


Steve Spires, Analyst (Focus: Healthcare)

Steve Spires, originally from Charleston, South Carolina, holds a Bachelors of Arts in Political Science with a double concentration in political theory and public policy from American University in Washington, D.C.

Steve previously worked as a health policy Intern at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, where he gained expertise in Medicaid and other healthcare reform issues.  As an undergraduate, he gained valuable experience as a policy Intern with the Association for Community Affiliated Plans, a non-profit representing 57 Medicaid-focused health plans in 27 states. Prior to that, he worked as a program analyst Intern with the District of Columbia Office on Aging.

In his spare time he enjoys listening to jazz and blues.

 

Mary Williams, Outreach Coordinator

Mary Williams coordinates and advocates on behalf of the Louisiana Budget Project and the Better Choices for a Better Louisiana Coalition for the passage of strategic initiatives that promote a balanced and transparent approach to Louisiana’s budget.

She has a background in state government, including service as Executive Director of the Louisiana Office of Tourism and Deputy Director of the Governor’s Office of Community Programs under Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco, in which she worked closely with the faith-based communities in coordinating services and donations for the displaced after Hurricane Katrina. Mary is a graduate of Louisiana State University with a journalism degree. Mary is an advocate of change that positively affects Louisiana’s future.
